Maybe it was when your friends heard you call your father “daddy.” Maybe it was when you decided you wanted to pick out your own clothes to wear to school. Whatever your first urge to start gaining independence from your parents, it probably happened in middle school. While this is a natural urge that everyone feels, some middle schoolers seem to gain that freedom with less stress and fewer regrets. The key, as we will discover in this 3-week series, is honor.
While the Bible is full of commandments for parents in raising and guiding their kids, there are relatively few for the children. All of those commandments can be summarized with the 5th commandment: “Honor your father and mother.” So, while this stretch toward independence might be stressful and weird for both parents and students, remember: “This is normal.”

This week’s bottom line: Your ability to honor your parents affects the rest of your life.
