During the fall of a student’s 7th-grade year, we will start promoting our summer service trips: global(x)/Transit Journeys. Middle school students are hyper-aware of their surroundings and culture. While this natural focus helps them develop their definition of the adults they’re becoming, it’s easy for them to lean towards more self-centered attitudes and behavior.

We encourage at least one parent to serve alongside their middle schooler on a global(x) journey after their student finishes 7th grade. It’s eye-opening and impactful for students to experience life in another country or culture and to be exposed to the different challenges other children and families navigate on a regular basis. It’s also powerful for students to serve others and to see their parents modeling that behavior. The experience naturally opens up conversations about priorities and values.

Our global(x)/Transit Journey applications open in mid-November, and close in early December. Each journey team has at least three meetings in the spring before they depart on their summer service trip.
